Gym Anthems To Make You Way Stronger

The AV and B awards for “Songs that come on Pandora and the whole room gets stronger as soon as the first bass chord drops”

1.  Jadakiss -Welcome to D Block

When Bryan and I were in college, we had a shared itunes account (cute, I know – c’mon we were really busy not studying) and this playlist was on both of our Ipods. No matter what day, exercise, or hangover we were working on, this song was guaranteed to be blasting in our ears as we got our pump on.  To this day, you can walk in the gym when we are training and there is a good chance this song will be playing at deafening levels to get us through some grinder workouts.

2. Nelly – Heart of a Champion

When Craig Watts showed up to start training with us, he introduced us to real rap music.  Not that we didn’t know about rap (I feel like we have a low-level doctorate in gangster rap), but he brought real rap into the gym.  Not commercial rap.  Rap that kids should not know about and the lyrics introduced things to my ears that, even at 31, I did not know existed.  And then, every time things would get tough, he would ask us to put on this song by Nelly.   This song is an anthem.  It kills.  But when someone brings really dirty, gangster rap into your life, and then tells you to crank the Nelly, the irony and awesomeness pushes this song into the lifetime top 10.

3.  Metallica – Bleeding Me

There was a day when Greg Pitts had pigtails and a bad attitude.  An attitude that allowed him to snatch 275, backs squat 355 for 20 reps, and clean and jerk 335.  This song reminds me of those days and it is one of my favorites.  When the second part of this song starts, I get instantly stronger.

4.  Eminem 50 Cent – Patiently Waiting

This is another anthem of Bryan and Anders early 20’s.  When Eminem rips the second verse it is pure genius.  I mean, he annihilates that verse and if you get into little cocky, white rappers telling the world to eff off during your workout, queue this one up.  To this day, I love the, “take some Big and some Pac, mix ‘em up in a pot, sprinkle a little Big L on top, what the F*ck do you got?  You get the realist and illest killas tied up a knot.  The juggernauts of this rap sh*t, like it or not.”  C’mon.  Seriously.  I will allow you to take time off from finishing this to go pick something heavy up.

5.  Roy Jones – Can’t be touched

In 2012, Ryan Fischer entered our life.  We were so deep in the competition scene and this song would rage through the gym on a 15 minute repeat.  There is something really aggressive about one of the best boxers to ever live, also writing an awesome rap song about being untouchable, and doing it in a bullet proof vest, “You will not win ‘cause I will not lose.”

6.  2Chainz – I’m Different

I really cannot tell you how much I love this song.  As soon as I hear “Mustard on the beat,” and those first few chords, and then Mr. Chainz drops the first, “I’m Different,” it warms my heart.  Has anyone ever had a cooler DJ name than Mustard?  Where the hell did that come from?  How did he make it out of the hood with a nickname like Mustard?  Its comical, the beat kills, and the line “Might valet park a Brinks Truck” gets me every time.  Gangster rap is so awesome.  It never makes sense and gets me so amped.  This song is so great I even went to rap genius one day to try to understand what he was trying to say, read all of it, and left even more confused - The true mark of a great gangster rap song.  TRUEEEE

7.  Young Buck, TI, Ludacris – Stomp

This is another beast from the original IPod.  If you cannot tell, Bryan and I were kind of wrapped up in the world of Eminem, 50 cent, The Game, and the rest of the G-Unit.  I am not sure if any rap group has cranked out so many excellent gym jams in that short of a period.  I have sat down and stood up with weight on my back more to these three people than any other.  They have single handedly been the bass and verbal lashing that has gotten me through more grueling training sessions than any other.  I owe them a lot.

8.  The Game – We aint

When Aftermath Records came out with “The Documentary,” this song instantly went on repeat all day, every day. The beat is so sick, the voice over intro kills, and The Game really seems like a pretty scary person.  If someone has his cell phone number, tell him thank you for making me strong and that everything is going to be ok.  Better yet, maybe I will just write him a letter in jail and we can be pen pals.  There is no way that guy should be allowed on the streets with regular people.

9.  Lil Wayne – Drop the World

“I got ice in my veins, blood in my eyes, hate in my heart, love on my mind.”  Seriously, remember when Lil Wayne was 14 and smashing it with Cash Money and the Big Tymers.  Could you imagine being 14 and hanging out with Birdman and Juvenile?  Your perspective on reality would be so strange.  What are the chances you could grow up around everyone in “Cash Money Billionaires,” “Dropping it like it’s Hot” and not wind up with a lot of tattoos on your face?  I love rappers.

10.  Wu Tang Clan – Triumph

There may not be a better rap song to ever exist.  The entire Shaolin Dynasty gets so dirty for like six straight minutes.  Inspectah Deck’s first verse may be the greatest in the history of being gangster.  To bomb atomically, melt steel like blacksmiths, and lyrically perform armed robbery, all in the first verse is so top notch.  36 chambers was a double CD that I hope to still play when I am back squatting 315# in the nursing home.  Bryan and I are going to be roommates at some super rad retirement home and the whole home is going to know we are getting super aggressive when they hear “I’m the Osiris of this sh*t.”

11.Bonus Material

The least gangster yet strongest rapper in the game…..
