Intensity - 3

Training without intensity can have neurological and down regulatory benefits that far exceed high intensity training and is a must to well-rounded training. Slow down and connect with the body.

“What if I feel like crap and do not want to train with any intensity? Should I do nothing, take the day off, or is there a way to develop without having to mentally and physically check in?”

So, yesterday you walked in, waxed your training partner, and now you are beat down and have no interest in looking at a barbell. I know about this, I just turned 33 and have a 9^th degree black belt in doing fitness without stressing intensity.

Eliminating intensity as the overriding principle of training creates freedom. Training, simplified, is the reinforcement of movement patterns that our bodies have developed through millions of years of evolution. Squatting was around well before barbells and people were throwing rocks at animals before wall balls were a thing. We are not reinventing the wheel here, we are taking fundamental movement patterns, practicing them, and then adding an external stimulus to challenge these patterns, and make you better at them quicker.

By lowering the intensity on any given day, it allows us the freedom to explore movement. Things as simple as a push up can be explored by raising the legs to create an incline. Maybe picking up a leg or doing them with one arm. You could even try and get super gangster and begin working on planche progressions.

Even going for a walk can be an exploration in movement patterns. Most programs I write have walking written into them at least one day a week. But this isn’t just walking. Each step is a focused approach in pulling with the glutes and hamstrings. This simple brain body connection can create pathways from the brain to the body to help relieve back pain, refine running form, and allow for some simple moving meditation. Squeezing your butt while walking creates a neurological response that can make you faster and stronger just by massaging the hard wire that connects your brain and your glutes. Not to mention, that focus can rid the brain of all the clutter it has been dealing with throughout the day.
