Intensity - 5

Do not let intensity and the adrenaline control your actions. Be smart. Intensity is a tool and should be used to maximize the return on your efforts in the gym.

Intensity, like everything, needs to be trained. On an even higher level of human need, however, is the ability to listen to your body. If you are working long hours, travelling, or not getting proper sleep and nutrition, listen to your body. There is a reason it is telling you to slow down.

No, you do not need to take the day off, you can still train, but find an intensity that allows you to feel better leaving the gym than when you arrived.

In 2014, while helping a client I created a brief checklist for him to follow. This athlete was a business owner, father of two, and travelled weekly up and down California for work. Before every training session he had to ask himself 3 questions:

1. Did I sleep 8 hours?

2. Did I work less than 10 hours?

3. Was my nutrition as quality as it should be?

If he could answer, “Yes,” to two of three of these questions he was allowed to kill it in the gym. Anything less than two of three and we stayed in the 80% range and if we could not answer yes to any of them, we just took the day off.

Following this model allows you to ensure the baseline of health is established before we start adding intensity and high level training. Your system is taxed throughout the day. Eating, sleeping, and managing stress should be at the top of your list. Training and intensity should be a result of quality choices made throughout the day.

Do not let intensity and the adrenaline control your actions. Be smart. Intensity is a tool and should be used to maximize the return on your efforts in the gym.
