The Community

Over the last couple weeks, the athletes of SDA will notice that there are some new whiteboards posted on the front wall above the rowers. In this post, I will discuss the boards and how they should be utilized by the members. In the next post, I will delve into some community events that are being planned throughout the course of the year.

New Member & “Player/Coach” Boards

On the top left, there is a split board. The left half is for new members. Every month or two, the board will be updated with a picture of each new member from that time period. Each picture will have one or two short details with regards to something unique or interesting about that person.

On the right side of the board, is the “player/coach” board. This board will also have pictures, but this board is specific to some veteran members of the community. In many cases, these people will be ex-coaches (Greg Kuchan, Erica Rozetti, Greg Pitts, Neil Halpen, among others). The goal is to provide an added value to members. If you are ever attending a class in which one of these “player/coaches” is present, you can ask them for help on technique, questions of implementation in regards to the programming for the day, or anything else you need.

Member Strength Board

To the right, at the top, is a board specifically for the members. Currently, there exists a glass “PR” board, next to where scores are written each day. This board resembles the all-time PR’s of anyone who every successfully made a lift at SDA (CrossFit PB) over the last 6 years. This board is nearly impossible to get on. I thought my 255# snatch would live for eternity there, until it didn’t. It is kind of absurd that you have to snatch over 265# as a male to get on the front board.

So the Member PR board was created. Coaches and drop-ins will not be added to this board, which will provide the members with multiple opportunities to establish a top lift. The top 5 men and top 5 women for each category will be added.

The athletes that make it on the board, must perform their lifts from this point forward. All spaces are blank, and lifts achieved prior to April, 2016, will not be counted on the Member PR Board.

Towards the end of June (prior to the “Cass Clash Partner Competition on July 2nd) we will conduct a week or two of testing, in which you’ll have an opportunity to set a max weight for each lift on the board.

Member Goals & Member PR’s Boards

Below the strength board is another split board. The left side is for goals. I am very happy that a lot of people are participating in this already. I have a couple thoughts on the current state of the board:

- Please try to write smaller. The board is almost entirely full, and there are only 10-15 goals up there.

- Keep goals to realistic and applicable categories. I love that E wants to surf with Pitts and AV, but this may not necessarily apply to this specific category.

- Establish goals that are meant for a 3-month period. If you put that you want to Squat 400 lbs, but your current max is 300, this is probably more of a long-term goal. Goals that are more specific and pragmatic will provide a more realistic opportunity to achieve them. I want you to feel empowered by achievement and avoid disappointment.

To the right of the GOALS board is the “Achievements/PR” board. The purpose of this board is to move the “goal” to the “achievement” category once you complete it. So in most cases, the “achievements” side will be blank for the first couple months, until the goals are accomplished.

Learn Thyself Board

At the bottom is a board which is meant to “guess” your score on 1 or 2 workouts each week. This is something that can benefit everyone, even if you don’t intend to “RX” a workout. When I am coaching classes, you all constantly hear me provide “pacing” advice prior to starting the WOD each day.

The ability to learn about yourself, will provide insight into how to attack these workouts. When you can realistically establish a hypothesis on your performance, you can then reflect on this, learn from the experience, and gradually become more knowledgeable about the way in which you need to approach a workout.

For example, there might be a workout of AMRAP 10 minutes with a ton of toes to bar, and you make a guess that you will achieve 4 rounds. Say you only achieve 3 rounds. Now you can learn from this, and determine why you failed to meet you goal. Did you burn out on TTB because you tried to do a rep sequence that was too aggressive? Maybe if you take a more strategic approach and partition these reps more, you can keep moving and get closer to your prediction.

When we put things down in writing, it provides us an ability to learn, and as a result, we will become smart and more efficient athletes.
